Design Talk: Behind-the-Scenes at Project Eastbridge

Today, we're diving into the creative process behind Project Eastbridge, an extensive main floor renovation completed by our team in Fall of 2023. We sat down with our designers, Christiane and Alex, to get a behind-the-scenes look at creating this transformation in Waterloo. Come along with us as we explore the creative process, important factors we considered, and the standout design moments we adored while transforming this project from concept to completion.

Interviewer: Christiane, Alex, could you give us a glimpse into how the design process for Project Eastbridge began?

Christiane (C): Absolutely! It all started with the clients' vision to revamp their main floor, particularly focusing on expanding the kitchen and creating an open, cohesive space. We had worked with them on some smaller renovation projects previously, but this one was always on the aspiration list, and so they wanted our team’s expertise to ensure that every detail was taken care of.

Alex (A): Yes, indeed. We kicked off with an In-Home Consultation, getting to know the clients' needs and wishes intimately before we kickoff the concept phase. The concept phase always starts with brainstorming sessions amongst the designers, playing with different layout options in AutoCAD, and pulling lots of inspirational photos and materials as a foundation for the project.

Interviewer: Fascinating! So, what were some of the key factors you considered while crafting the design concepts for this project?

C: Well, the clients had a clear idea of what they wanted – a brighter, more integrated kitchen with ample storage, beverage centre, and a larger island. We took cues from their contemporary taste, blending in elements of farmhouse and traditional styles to create a personalized design.

A: Absolutely. It was all about striking that delicate balance between functionality and aesthetics, ensuring that every aspect of the design resonated with the clients' lifestyle and preferences. With the open-concept, cohesion was critical. We incorporated a custom fireplace wall with natural stone and built-in cabinetry in the adjacent family room to blend seamlessly with the new kitchen design.

Interviewer: It sounds like a meticulous process! How did you go about gathering inspiration and incorporating the clients' preferences into the design?

C: We began by drawing inspiration from the clients' initial ideas and style preferences. From there, it was all about translating their vision into tangible design elements, from finishes and colours to fixtures and textures. They wanted a neutral colour palette, with texture and pops of black for contrast. We were able to achieve this by pulling in beautiful light oak LVP (luxury vinyl planks) throughout the main floor, natural stone for the fireplace, matte black pendants and plumbing fixtures and both maple and oak accent pieces throughout the kitchen and family room, such as the custom range hood and floating shelves.

A: Exactly. We wanted to create a space that not only looked beautiful but also felt tailor-made for the clients. So, we paid close attention to details like finishes, colours, and materials, ensuring that each choice reflected their unique style.

Interviewer: What inspired you most when creating this design?

C: We wanted to create a beautiful and functional space for this family. Knowing that they work from home and enjoy hosting gatherings, we aimed to create an environment that could effortlessly transition from workspace to entertainment hub, all while offering moments of relaxation at the end of the day. Their lifestyle and needs inspired us to create a versatile space.

A: Additionally, we drew inspiration from the stunning surroundings of their lot and backyard. With abundant natural light filtering through the windows, we were motivated to infuse the interior with a sense of brightness and warmth. By incorporating elements of wood and stone, we aimed to create a cozy yet inviting ambiance in the family room, mirroring the earthy allure of the outdoors.

Interviewer: That attention to detail is truly commendable! Now, let's talk about some of the challenges you faced during the design process. Were there any hurdles you had to overcome?

C: Oh, certainly! One of the challenges we encountered was the narrow layout of the kitchen, even after removing the dividing wall. It took some creative brainstorming and numerous hours of meticulous planning but we were able to create a layout that accommodated all of their requirements that optimized the space and allowed for proper flow and clearances.

A: Absolutely. But challenges are just opportunities in disguise, right? But we had a great team in place. Through effective communication and collaboration with the contractor, trades, millwork company and our team, we were able to navigate through the obstacles seamlessly.

Interviewer: Impressive teamwork! Now, before we wrap up, I'm curious to know – what were your favorite elements of the final design?

C: Personally, I fell in love with the hand-crafted dining room chandelier. It's a true work of art that adds a touch of elegance to the space, but the big kitchen island and complimenting limestone fireplace wall are a close second.

A: For me, it has to be the quartz backsplash in the kitchen. It's sleek, sophisticated, and truly elevates the entire design. With the under-cabinet lighting, it’s a real show-stopper, especially in the evening.

Interviewer: Stunning choices! Finally, what can clients expect when they choose to work with Beyond The Design Studio?

C: At Beyond The Design Studio, every client that works with us can expect a unique design tailored to their needs and style.
